Hope in the Silence
There is a hopeful reading too. The fact that life appeared on Earth so quickly hints that getting started may be the easy part — and that the truly impossible step might be one we have already cleared. If so, the galaxy's emptiness would mean life itself is incredibly rare, while the few civilizations that do emerge have bright futures ahead.

Earth's record offers a clue. Fossil evidence suggests life appeared within the first few hundred million years, almost as soon as conditions allowed. Whether that speed reflects easy odds or a lucky local fluke is exactly what astrobiology is trying to settle — and every new discovery narrows down where the filter sits.
