Why Splitting Wins

The gecko's real trick is not how many hairs it has, but how finely each one frays. A single seta divides into hundreds of flattened tips called spatulae, each only a few millionths of a meter wide.

The finer the tip, the more snugly it molds to a surface's bumps, and the stronger the van der Waals pull becomes. Adhesion here is a numbers game won by splitting one hair into many, not by pressing harder.

Strong, Clean, Reusable

A gecko grips hard, leaves the glass spotless when it lets go, and can do it again and again. Engineers have not matched that combination of strong, clean, and reusable.

Gecko-inspired adhesives already grip climbing robots to walls and hold surgical patches onto wet tissue. The hard part that remains is durability: copied pads wear out and clog with dust far faster than a living foot.
