The Lab-Made Future

The next step skips the donor entirely. Scientists are testing synthetic stool — defined mixes of bacteria grown in a lab rather than harvested from a person. The promise is a clean, consistent product: no donor variability, far lower infection risk, and a precise recipe of microbes chosen for the job.

The bigger vision is a shift in how we treat disease — not by attacking one germ, but by restoring a whole ecosystem back to health. Instead of asking which drug kills the problem, doctors start asking which missing community needs to be rebuilt.
