LESSON 5 · Career Small Talk

The Invisible Rules

Every culture has unwritten rules about small talk — what's appropriate, how formal to be, and which topics are off-limits. Violating these rules can end a relationship before it starts, often without the other person ever naming the rule you broke out loud.

The first step: recognize that your own small talk style is culturally specific, not universal. What feels natural to you may feel aggressive or distant to someone else. The good news is that this awareness alone already softens your approach — you stop assuming and start watching.
