Aliens as Mirrors

Alien encounter films rarely depict real alien contact. Instead, they project human anxieties onto extraterrestrial forms. The xenomorph in Alien embodies parasitism and violation. E.T. embodies childhood loneliness and the wish for a perfect friend.

Every generation gets the aliens it deserves. Cold War aliens were invaders. 1980s aliens were friendly visitors. Post-9/11 aliens were destroyers. Each version reflects what the culture fears or desires at that moment.
