Why Percentages Beat Yes/No
Probabilistic thinking has clear advantages:
- Nuance — a 51% belief and a 99% belief are both "yes" in binary thinking, but they call for very different actions.
- Updating — new evidence shifts a probability bit by bit. In binary thinking, evidence either changes everything or nothing.
- Decision quality — choices built on probabilities account for uncertainty. Binary choices ignore it.
The gap between a 60% and an 80% chance of rain should change whether you grab an umbrella.
