LESSON 5 · Live Greener Without Going Crazy

Spotting Greenwash

Developing a greenwashing radar is a genuine skill. Watch for these red flags:

  • Vague language — words like "eco-friendly," "natural," or "green" with no specific, measurable claim
  • Pretty packaging — leaves, green colors, and nature imagery are design choices, not evidence
  • No third-party certification — real standards come from independent bodies, not company marketing
  • Minor-win spotlight — celebrating one small win while ignoring the bigger picture
  • Future promises without action — "net zero by 2050" with no binding interim targets

Instead, look for B Corp certification, verified carbon data, and transparent supply-chain reporting.
