LESSON 5 · True Stories of the Wild West

Comanche: Lords of the Plains

The Comanche transformed themselves from a small mountain tribe into the dominant military power of the southern Great Plains. Their mastery of horseback warfare was unmatched: warriors could fire arrows accurately while hanging off the side of a galloping horse, using the animal's body as a moving shield.

This mobility let them strike fast over huge distances and slip away before any organized force could respond.

Comanche dominance was so complete that it reshaped the geopolitics of North America. Spain's failure to colonize Texas was largely due to Comanche resistance. Mexico's inability to control its northern frontier created the vacuum that American settlers exploited.
