LESSON 5 · True Stories of the Wild West
Nations That Were Never Conquered
The Seminole of Florida were never formally defeated by the United States. Three wars failed to remove them entirely. Some retreated deep into the Everglades where the Army could not follow. The government gave up, making them one of the few Native nations never conquered.

A Costly Stalemate
The Seminole Wars cost the United States over $40 million and roughly 1,500 soldiers, yet never forced a full surrender. The fighting dragged on for years across swamp and dense cover that favored small, mobile bands over large columns.
This outcome cuts against the textbook story of inevitable Native defeat. A determined nation, fighting on its own ground, could simply make conquest cost more than it was worth.
