LESSON 5 · Your Brain on Music
Empathy and Memory
Empathic listeners — people who score high on measures of emotional empathy — tend to enjoy sad music significantly more than others. They are drawn to the emotional simulation: imagining the singer's pain, connecting it to their own experiences, and feeling a sense of shared humanity. Sad music becomes a form of emotional exercise.

Memory amplifies the effect. A song associated with a breakup, a loss, or a specific period of your life does not just trigger sadness — it triggers nostalgia, which is a bittersweet blend of longing and warmth.
