Anatomy of Sadness

Sadness in music is not random. Composers build it from a few well-worn ingredients:

  • Minor keys — cross-culturally linked to sadness, though context matters
  • Slow tempo — typically 60 to 80 BPM, the pace of slow breathing or a resting heartbeat
  • Descending melodies — downward lines echo how the voice falls when someone is grieving
  • Soft, breathy vocals — quiet, intimate delivery signals vulnerability and pulls listeners in
