The Power of Prediction

Children melt down most when they are surprised by transitions, limits, or changes in routine. Prevention means narrating the near future consistently.

Pre-teaching is another prevention tool. Before a difficult situation, rehearse expectations: "At the restaurant, we sit in our chair and use quiet voices. If it gets hard, we can take a walk outside." Children who know the plan comply at dramatically higher rates.
