The debate has real stakes for justice systems. If people do not freely choose their actions, the basis for moral responsibility weakens and punishment-as-retribution loses its footing.

Yet even hard determinists usually support consequences for harmful behavior — not as blame, but as deterrence, rehabilitation, and public protection. The aim of justice shifts from assigning fault to managing behavior and preventing harm.
