Practical Freedom

Whatever the metaphysics, the experience of choosing stays central to life. You weigh options, consider consequences, and act on your conclusions. From the inside, that simply is choice.

Philosopher Daniel Dennett argues this functional freedom is all we need or could want. The most useful stance may be to act as if your choices matter — belief in agency tends to produce better outcomes than fatalism, whether free will is metaphysically real or a useful fiction.
