LESSON 5 · The Physics Inside Your Gadgets

Faraday's Gift

In 1831, Michael Faraday discovered that moving a magnet near a coil of wire produced electric current — no battery needed. He called it electromagnetic induction. The changing magnetic field created an electric field that pushed electrons through the wire.

This single discovery powers most of civilization. Generators use it to produce electricity. Every coal, gas, nuclear, wind, and hydroelectric plant converts mechanical motion into current through Faraday's principle. Wireless charging is its latest application.
