LESSON 5 · Forces You Feel Every Day

Falling Together

The stomach-drop moment on a roller coaster happens when the car crests a hill and begins to fall. For a brief, glorious moment, you and the car are in free fall — both accelerating downward at the same rate.

No contact force, no sensation of weight. Your inner ear, which detects acceleration, suddenly registers nothing. That stomach-drop feeling is your organs briefly floating inside your body — every part of you falling at the same rate, with nothing pushing back.
