Before any holiday, visit, or phone call, align with your partner. Agree on boundaries together: how long the visit lasts, what topics are off-limits, what you'll do if things go sideways.

When an in-law crosses a line, your partner — not you — should address it. "Mom, we've decided that's not how we're handling it" hits differently than you saying the same thing. The "we" is crucial. It shows the family that the couple is a unit, not two individuals to be lobbied separately.
