Content Delivery Networks

Streaming services do not send data from one central location. They use Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) — thousands of servers spread around the world that cache copies of popular content.

Netflix takes the CDN idea to the extreme with its Open Connect program. The company places its own custom-built servers — called Netflix appliances — directly inside ISP networks, so your stream may never even leave your provider's network.
