LESSON 4 · Voice Care Essentials

Emotional and Muscular Tension

Stress causes unconscious muscle tension in the neck, jaw, and throat that compresses the larynx and restricts vocal fold movement. Over time, this pattern becomes habitual — the muscles stay tight even when the stressor passes.

The voice you use when stressed — higher, tighter, and more effortful — becomes the voice you default to. Breaking this pattern requires awareness, physical release techniques, and sometimes professional voice therapy.
