LESSON 5 · The Daily Voice Warm-Up

Why Cool-Downs Matter

After a long stretch of talking, your vocal folds may feel warm, a little swollen, and tired, and so can the muscles around them. Some professional voice users find that stopping abruptly leaves the throat feeling tight, while a gentle wind-down helps the voice feel easier afterward.

Singers learn cool-down routines as a matter of course. Speakers almost never do. But a teacher after six hours of class, a salesperson off back-to-back calls, or anyone who just gave a keynote has used their voice as hard as a singer after a show. The need to recover is exactly the same.
