At the Oklo uranium deposits, groundwater seeped into rich ore and acted as a moderator, slowing neutrons enough to sustain fission. The reactions pulsed for hundreds of thousands of years, boiling the water away, pausing, then restarting as fresh water returned. They are the only known natural nuclear reactors on Earth.
