Chain Reaction
If enough fissile material is packed together — a quantity called the critical mass — the cascade of splitting nuclei becomes self-sustaining.

In a nuclear reactor, control rods made of neutron-absorbing materials like boron slide between fuel rods to regulate the reaction rate. Push them in and the reaction slows. Pull them out and it speeds up. The difference between a nuclear reactor and a nuclear bomb is simply control.
