Peloton Aerodynamics

A professional peloton is an aerodynamic organism. Riders at the front face full wind resistance while those sheltered in the middle may save up to 40% of their energy.

Wind direction changes the optimal formation. In a headwind, the peloton narrows into single file. In a crosswind, riders form an echelon — a diagonal line shielding each cyclist. Crosswind echelons split races apart because not everyone fits.
