LESSON 6 · Sports Science: The Physics of Winning
Racing the Clock Alone
In a time trial, there is no peloton to hide in. Riders race the clock alone, so aerodynamics becomes the single biggest factor separating winner from loser. Everything is optimized to cut drag:
- Aero helmets with elongated tails smooth airflow over the head
- Skinsuits use textured panels to manage boundary-layer turbulence
- Disc wheels and deep rims reduce spoke-generated turbulence
- Aero bars drop the torso and tuck the arms, shrinking frontal area
A full time trial rig can save 30 to 60 watts over a standard road setup at 50 km/h.
