LESSON 7 · The Confidence Project
The Chicken-and-Egg Problem
Which comes first — competence or confidence? Do you need to feel confident before you can perform well, or do you need to perform well before you can feel confident?
The answer from research is clear: they develop together, in a spiral. A small amount of competence generates a small amount of confidence, which motivates slightly more practice, which builds slightly more competence, which generates slightly more confidence.
The critical insight is that the loop begins with action, not feeling. You do not need to feel confident to start. You need to start to feel confident. Waiting for confidence before acting is like waiting to feel warm before turning on the heater.
