LESSON 6 · Escape Toxic Patterns

Origins of the Pattern

People-pleasing almost always begins in childhood, in homes where a child learned that safety or love depended on keeping others happy.

Conditional love. If affection arrived only when you were obedient, you had to perform an acceptable version of yourself to be loved.

Volatile households. If a parent's mood set the emotional weather, you became hypervigilant, always reading the room.

Parentification. If you were expected to handle adult responsibilities, you learned your job was to care for others, no matter your own needs.

Bullying or rejection. If being yourself led to exclusion, your strategy became: find what others want and provide it.
