Hidden in Plain Sight

Trauma responses hide because they mimic socially valued traits.

  • Fight looks like leadership. The person who dominates meetings is praised as "strong" when they are in chronic combat mode.
  • Flight looks like productivity. A packed calendar reads as "hardworking" when the person is terrified of stillness.
  • Freeze looks like calmness. Never upset, never drama — called "easygoing" when actually dissociated.
  • Fawn looks like kindness. Always says yes, running a survival program: if I make everyone happy, no one will hurt me.

The tragedy: these responses are often rewarded, which reinforces them.
