LESSON 6 · Emotional Intelligence for Couples

Making Better Bids

Your own bids matter too. Vague bids get vague responses. Clear bids get connection:

  • Vague: "Whatever" — Clear: "I miss you — can we set aside tonight for just the two of us?"
  • Vague: Sighing loudly — Clear: "I'm stressed and could use a hug"
  • Vague: "Must be nice to have free time" — Clear: "I'm overwhelmed and need help"
  • Vague: Silent resentment — Clear: "Something's been bothering me — can we talk?"

Making your bids explicit and vulnerable raises the odds they'll be received. You're not being needy — you're being clear about what you need.
