LESSON 7 · Grammar That Actually Matters
Would vs. Should
"Would" lives in the world of imagination and politeness. "I would love to" expresses willingness. "Would you mind?" is one of the most polite requests in English. "Should" lives in the world of advice and obligation. "You should try it" is a recommendation. "You should not lie" is a moral rule.
The trap with "should" is overusing it. Saying "you should do this" too often makes you sound preachy. Swap it for "you might want to" or "it helps to" when giving friendly advice. Save "should" for strong recommendations. Native speakers notice when someone "shoulds" them too much, and they stop listening.
