LESSON 7 · Grammar That Actually Matters
Modals in Real Conversations
Choosing the wrong modal rarely breaks grammar, but it does break the mood. Pick one that is too blunt and you sound demanding; pick one that is too formal and you sound stiff. The fix is matching the modal to the setting. Among friends, a direct can feels warm and easy. With a boss, a client, or a stranger, lean on could and would to add a little distance and respect. In writing, especially email, "I would recommend" lands more smoothly than a flat "you must."
A simple default: when unsure, reach for could. It fits almost any situation without tipping into too casual or too formal.
