Wason gave people the sequence '2-4-6' and asked them to find the hidden rule. Most guessed 'ascending even numbers' and only tested cases that fit, like 8-10-12. The actual rule was simply 'any increasing numbers,' which they could have caught by testing a sequence meant to fail.
