The Internet Made It Worse

Filter bubbles and algorithmic recommendations can reinforce confirmation bias, but the size of that effect is debated. Social media often shows you content similar to what you have liked before, while many users still encounter at least some opposing views online.

The result is epistemic tribalism — groups of people who share beliefs and never face serious challenges to them. Each group sees the other as deluded because they are consuming completely different information. Neither side is lying. They are simply living inside different versions of reality.
