LESSON 2 · Under the Hood: How the Internet Works

Being Cloud-Smart

Use cloud services wisely:

  • Keep local backups of critical files — Google has shut down nearly 300 products since 2006. Anything you value deserves a copy you control.
  • Know where data lives — files on European servers fall under GDPR, while US servers fall under the CLOUD Act, which lets agencies request access. Jurisdiction matters.
  • Add your own encryption before uploading — a free third-party tool like Cryptomator scrambles files on your device first, so they reach the cloud already locked.

Weigh vendor lock-in before committing. Migrating a company off one provider can cost millions and take years.
