LESSON 5 · Philosophy of Love

Agape in World Religions

Unconditional love appears across religious traditions under different names. Buddhism teaches metta (loving-kindness) extended to all beings without exception. Hindu philosophy speaks of prema — divine love that flows without conditions. Islam emphasizes rahma — God's mercy given freely to all creation.

That so many unrelated traditions arrive here suggests unconditional love speaks to a deep human need, not just a local custom. It does not prove agape is the right approach to love, but it does show the idea keeps reappearing wherever people think hard about love's highest form.
