LESSON 2 · Your Brain on Music
Clinical Applications
Music therapy treats a wide range of conditions with measurable outcomes. In NICU (neonatal intensive care), live music sung to premature infants improves oxygen saturation, reduces stress hormones, and promotes weight gain. Dementia patients who sing familiar songs show reduced agitation and improved social interaction.

Chronic pain patients often report meaningfully lower pain intensity after music therapy sessions, along with reduced anxiety and a lighter need for pain medication. Autism spectrum patients frequently respond to musical structure when they cannot process verbal communication.
