Fine silk
Long before paper, painters worked on fine silk stretched over a wooden frame, using ink ground fresh from a stick against a stone. The smooth, absorbent surface rewarded a confident gesture and punished hesitation, which shaped the whole aesthetic of Chinese brushwork.
