Fossil Fuel Rebranding

Some of the most aggressive greenwashing comes from oil and gas companies. BP rebranded itself as "Beyond Petroleum" in 2000 while increasing fossil fuel production. Shell advertised carbon offset programs while being one of the top 10 corporate emitters in history.

In 2021, a Dutch court ordered Shell to cut emissions 45% by 2030 — treating climate pledges as legally binding promises. Courts and regulators increasingly handle misleading environmental claims the same way they treat false advertising in any other domain.
