The Recovery Path

Breaking the pattern is hard because it means tolerating discomfort you have spent your life avoiding.

Notice the urge. Before you can change the pattern, you have to catch it in action.

Practice honesty. Start small. When a friend suggests a plan you'd rather skip, say so. These tiny acts rebuild a muscle people-pleasing let waste away.

Tolerate disapproval. This is the core fear. Someone may be upset with you. Sit with that feeling without acting on it, and collect proof it is uncomfortable but not dangerous.

Redefine kindness. "I can't help" is kinder than helping resentfully.
